Low-carb

What does a low-carb diet mean?

In case of a low-carb diet, you reduce the amount of carbohydrates in your diet. You can do it at different levels, from mild to very strict.
Especially for people with diabetes it’s a good way to get the blood sugar levels down and thereby reduce the medication. The often present insulin resistance can thus be circumvented and the insulin sensitivity (the rate at which your body responds to the hormone insulin) can be increased again.
People with overweight can use this diet to reduce the body weight. By eating fewer carbohydrates, your energy level will be stable and you won’t be hungry soon again (sugars are addictive). By eating enough proteins and more unsaturated fats, you consume enough energy and will feel full for a long time.
It’s important to look what diet is appropriate for your lifestyle. Sometimes a light carbohydrate restriction is the most viable, because a person can do this for years.

The role of the dietitian

If you want to follow a low-carb diet, it’s still important to get all the nutrients, so that you won’t have any shortages. The dietitian monitors this by calculating the nutrition and, if necessary, to supplement this. She also takes any medical conditions and medications that may have an affect into account.

Carbohydrates are sub-divided into:
  • - Milk sugar (lactose) in milk, buttermilk, yoghurt and custard.
  • - Fruit sugar (fructose) in fruits and fruit juices.
  • - Pure sugar (sucrose) in biscuits, cakes, sweets and soft drinks
  • - Carbs in bread, potatoes, pulses, grain products, pasta and rice.
